An unusual science fiction movie that's a stark contrast to the later films George Lucas would be better known for. Both in style and tone.

George Lucas's first feature is a slow and thoughtful film, different and strange for the Star Wars director. The performances he draws out of Duvall and McOmie are nuanced and haunting. The film presents a chilling and depressing view of an Orwellian future and does a lot with very little, in terms of SFX and set design.

I've only seen the 'Director's Cut', which from my understanding is essentially the same movie as before, but with tweaked scenes and added special f/x. Lucas just can't help but change his existing movies. However, unlike the updated versions of the original 'Star Wars' trilogy, Lucas manages to use these new additions effectively and make them not stand out near as much. Some of them actually slightly improve the film. This is a uniquely weird 70's sci-fi film that has more going on under the surface. It's worth repeat visits to find it's layered qualities.

This is another one of those movies that I think I could fall in love with. It is very odd and complex (surprising coming from Lucas) but it lacks a definite meaning. I don't know if I would like it though with out the director's cut. Hmmmm
