It's a lot weirder and offbeat than you'd expect.

Reputed to have been the last film released in the 1980s, this buddy cop vehicle starring Stallone and Russell feels like a madcap mixture of every eighties cliche. Serving as a precursor to the likes of Hot Shots and Last Action Hero, the pair venture from one genre to another under 100 minutes.
Sure technically, it's a cop movie, but then it's a prison break film, a sitcom romance, a Max Max action flick, and to top it all off, the characters are outfitted with a battle ready SUV not unlike the Batmobile.
All the while, and making the film more interesting today, is the subtly gay subtext between Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone. Both of whom, to their credit, play the insane material just enough to wink at the audience. Jack Palance is having fun as the villain as is Brison …

More one-liners than action or story

Rival police detectives (Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone), both with big egos, are convicted for a murder that they were actually framed on by a major crime lord (Jack Palance) who has bought numerous high ranking cops and city officials. The two escape from a rough prison, that they were not sentenced to for 18 months, to find the person or persons who framed him.
There is some fair action scenes in this movie, but it's the zingers that Russell and Stallone throw at each other that makes them the only real interesting part of the movie.
The action itself is, like I stated, fair at best. Most of the action scenes are near the end of the movie, and aren't too over the top. Smaller action scenes are sprinkled throughout the movie leading to the climax and are a little weaker …
