Sweeney Todd - Review

"There was a barber and his wife, and she was beautiful. A foolish barber and his wife. She was his reason and his life, and she was beautiful. And she was virtuous. And he was..."

The last great movie from Tim Burton.

Sure, Frankenweenie and Big Eyes were fine, but I honestly felt his heart and soul went into this movie than his recent ones.

The bloodiest musical ever staged and I loved it.

'Sweeney Todd' is a fantastic dark tale of bloody revenge with bottled up sorrow. There's something incredibly spectral about the atmosphere throughout the movie that uniquely blends shadows and darkness to create traumatic events. However, the movie isn't shy away of dark humor.

With it being a musical, the songs are all equally brilliant. My favorites are between "My friends" and …

"Sweeney Todd" by Yojimbo

I hate musicals. I'm not just saying that to appear manly; I really, really do. But I was willing to give this a chance because I'm a big fan of Tim Burton and I thought if anyone could pull it off, it would be him. His trademark Gothic imagery is as excellent as always, and Johnny Depp and Helena are pretty damn good, surrounded by some great production design and lovely costumes. AS LONG AS THEY'RE NOT SINGING. The fact is I was willing to give this a chance thinking I could grit my teeth through the musical numbers in order to enjoy the rest of the film. But there IS NO rest of the film. It's like a camp pantomime cum bohemian opera in which the dialogue in its ENTIRETY is sung in half-arsed cod poetry. I sat through it to enjoy Burton's visuals but only by viewing it on fast forward. …

Great Burton, Wonderful Musical

Zombified - wrote on 12/27/2009

I've always had this weird love for Tim Burton movies, and somehow I knew that Sweeney Todd would be just as good, if not better, than all the rest.

The story of Sweeney Todd is wonderful, eerie, and down right gory. I loved the way the story progressed, along with how the characters developed. The little ways the characters reacted to each other made the story even better with each second. Even if the characters were slightly different, the story would still be wonderful.

The characters really do help the story move along. The characters are realistic, but at the same time, they're really far from the world. The way that Sweeney Todd acts through the movie is really interesting. I especially love the way that he interacts with Mrs. Lovett. There's just something about their …

Great Musical

I loved listing to "Sweeney Todd" music before the movie was first picked up. The music was wonderful and brought out by the fantastic singers that were chosen first. When I heard Tim Burton was picking up the musical and making it into a movie, I was ecstatic. This kind of musical was right down Tim Burton's alleyway.

The artistry and actors that went into "Sweeney Todd" still amazes me. Tim Burton does a really good job of picking actors that work well for the roles that they're portraying. Along with these actors, he films them well and brings to life a world that seems so real that I feel I'm there with them.

With "Sweeney Todd" the music sung was done beautifully. I loved the way the actors sounded by themselves and with the other actors. Along with the music, the actors …

The dark side of Edward.

I love all cinema. That means I love most genres. Musical, is one of those. Although, for the past couple of years, my love for musicals had decreased. Dunno why, they just kinda bore me, you know? Anyway, I'll never stop loving classic stuff, and well made flicks. This film is fantastic. Of course is a Burton, so I don't have to say you see his signature in every dang scene. The mood, the photo and colors. Johnny Depp never stops of amazing me. He can do anything! The man acts he's breath off. The story is actually very interesting. I was concerned by the fact that Danny Elfman wouldnt perform the music, but... then I understood it wasnt the way to be done (his style, i mean) is not a film for his chorus and violins. For momments, it doesnt seem a Burton flick. So, a very i find this a …

This film is a absolute masterpiece

It has everything that I look for in a film. It made me feel absolutely fantsatic. It is a film that isn't just gruesome and emotional but it is a real kick-ass style that not very many Tim Burton films have. It is very emotional because of how Barker was sent away and what happened to his wife and daughter. Also, it is why he has changed his name and why he is obsessed with killing Turpin for revenge. I find it a real kick-ass film too because all of the characters are so powerful. The awesome dark colors used and the great dialogue is well written.

Johnny Depp delivers in my opinion his greatest on-screen performance he has ever done because it was a very powerful character. It was the first time that Johnny has portrayed a villain but after watching this film, I realised how good …

pretty good songs singing and spectacle

Ichabod Crane - wrote on 09/05/2008

Sweeney Todd like most movie musicals have a lot to do with three things the singing the songs and the spectacle. The singing is really fine all around. I know many dislike Helena Bonham carter's singing but I saw the original Angela Lansbury and really its the character more than anything else. Everyone else is good but different from other iterations of the musical. The songs vary and really they vary from person to person. I liked some a lot like my friends and pretty women, but did not care much for no place like London, but someone could have a different view entirely. Finally the spectacle is very well done. The Oscar winning art direction is great as are the costumes and the sets. I would say that this is Tim Burton's third best film far behind Ed wood, and somewhat behind Pee …

Gore+Blood+Singing+Visuals = Sweeney Todd

BryanFury - wrote on 01/31/2008

I would have given it a four if it wasn't a musical. Although I must say they got me by surprise when everybody starts singing. It is by far the most tasteful musical I’ve seen. There is no better helmsman to handle a dark visually stunning musical than the visionary Tim Burton. But then in my opinion an audience who would be seeing this should have a solid appreciation for art and music. Because I myself am not a musical type of person, but seeing the whole formula blend together made me think twice. But I still hate musicals though. Johnny Depp’s versatility is worthy of an Oscar statuette. One other thing I like seeing is blood gushing through the necks of all those who deserve to die. But then all of us deserved to die, ok maybe everybody except me. Seriously I may not recommend …

Not Burton's Best but It's Delicious Enough

Franz Patrick - wrote on 01/29/2008

For a Tim Burton film, it's pretty good but it's no masterpiece. My favourite character turned out to be Toby (played by the newcomer Edward Sanders--which I'm going to look out for in the future because he reminds me so much of the always enchanting Freddie Highmore) because he managed to be really charismatic and I very much cared for him. I absolutely loved the look of the film--forlorn, bleak, and gothic-like. I thought Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter were born for their roles. My main problem is that, for a musical, the songs aren't that magneficient. At first, I thought that the "Joanna song" was very good but then it got stuck in my head and I desperately wanted to get rid of it. Still, its flaws don't outweigh the fact that this is a good movie. I also thought that this is a …

Good Movie, But Not a Good Musical

Alex - wrote on 01/06/2008

Though I know nothing previously about Sweeney Todd, I enjoyed this movie. As a musical, it didn't do a whole lot as I didn't find any of the tunes outstanding. They were not bad though. Depp is magnificent and deserves a nomination. But, for Burton, there are far better (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Pee Wee's Big Adventure).

Sweeney Todd almost works better not as a musical. As I said, none of the songs really made me sing along or in fact, I don't remember the words to any of the songs. It is bloody but not gruesome. There are a few twists that keep you thinking and the cinematography (as always with Burton) is wonderful. I wouldn't quite put this up there as one of the best movies, but it is close. Maybe a second viewing will do wonders, but I find that unlikely. …
