Not Your Parents' Star Trek

GeminiSixty6 - wrote on 05/11/2009

Helm, set course for greatness, maximum warp. Star Trek pushes you into warp speed starting with the very first frame and doesn’t drop out of warp until the credits roll. Our beloved characters are back trekking around the cosmos. This time it’s a chronicle of the early days of the Enterprise crew. When an unhappy Romulan calling himself Nero shows up, Kirk and company must safe the galaxy from utter destruction. This is what Summer blockbusters are all about: fast paced action, a gripping story, and phenomenal acting.

Ever since I was a small child I can remember watching Star Trek either with my father or my mother. Both of my parents were into it, and so naturally I was exposed to the Star Trek universe very early on. Now I will admit that I have not seen too many of the …

Great reboot to kick off the summer season.

Bob Stone - wrote on 05/09/2009

Summer is a time when new fans of old thing are born. I have never once in my life seen a single episode of Star Trek in my life. But being the pop culture powerhouse that it is, I know all the characters, the famous quotes ("Live long a prosper" etc.) , and of course the instantly recognizable space craft, Enterprise. I have never really been too exposed to Star Trek, as I said before, so when I heard of the movie coming out I immediatley dismissed it as another failed attempt tp reboot a series that will only appeal to fans of the original, but I tell you hear this reboot is the most vivid, and exciting reboot to come along yet. The actors hit their marks with obscene precision, and director J.J. Abrams succeeds with flying colors in making this not only a fan's films, but 100% …

Star Trek: Boldly Going!

SmokeScreener - wrote on 05/09/2009

One of the marketing tools for this film is "It's not your father's Star Trek". It turns out that it doesn't have to be. Using a complicated plot to drive a great action fillm, J.J. Abrams has simultaneously rooted his film deeply in the past and changed the future.

Think about it. This is the ultimate reboot of the entire Star Trek universe. He has created a parallel time line. Nothing that has occured in the past (at least as far as 4 out of 5 television series and all 10 previous films are concerned) can or will happen again. Much like the Vulcan High Council of the eradicated planet has become the caretakers of the Vulcan history and culture, Spock has become the caretaker of the original Star Trek history and culture.

This frees the caretakers of the franchise to boldly …

Boldy Going Strong After All These Years

Chris Kavan - wrote on 05/09/2009

Can you believe it's been 40 years since we first heard "Space, the final frontier..." Through movies and various series (some better than others), Star Trek has been the sci-fi to set the standard. I'm not a hardcore Trekkie - I like Next Generation, not the original series so much, but was always more of a Star Wars fan. I guess that's why I think this reboot of the venerable franchise works so well.

J. J. Abrams takes a relatively unknown cast, a well-known universe and packs it with the right mix of action and emotion to give a much-needed kick in the pants to a flagging series. Like many people, I was skeptical that this cast would have chops to replace that indelible image of the original cast, but I was pleasantly surprised with the result. In particular Zachary Quinto (who …

A Reboot To A Long Summer

Alex - wrote on 05/07/2009

I am a decently sized Star Trek: The Next Generation fan, but I wouldn't call myself avid. I enjoyed the 60s version but don't remember much about it. I love sci fi movies. This movie was above average but I expected so much more. The trailer was amazing, the music in the trailer was great, and the action looked incredible. I never really knew what the story was other than the standard "Kirk and Spock" grow up together plot.

The action was pretty good, the special effects were good but beyond that, I can't say much else. Yeah, it was good to see the old crew back together but there were a lot of forced lines and forced relationships that I didn't enjoy. If you are going for a total reboot here, reboot it with a power punch, not just an action flick. Also, the music bothered me. …
