Fair drama that contains terrific acting. Most will praise Meryl Streep (and she deserves it), but I thought Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol were equally great. The scenes between the three of them are what make the movie memorable. However, I was not so much interested in those scenes displaying Sophie's past. The ending is quite bittersweet and a perfect cap to the story.

Meryl Streep's children and grandchildren will be able to watch this performance, one of the most total inhabitations of a character's skin ever, and be proud. The rest of us can just watch in amazement.

Meryl Streep's performance and Sophie's personal story part of the film is incredibly good. It is incredibly emotionally effective maybe even too much with the "choice" scene, and is simply an effective storyline of an interesting character. Peter MacNicol is quite uninteresting though as is his storyline about the southern writer. Kevin Kline also hurts the main "present" storyline with his very overacted performance.

A solid movie though not worthy of an addition to the AFI top 100. Streep's performance is absolutely amazing. The story is good and the acting is top notch. I do think it missed that special something that could have put it into greatness.

This is a most heart-breaking story. If you are sensitive, you may find the choice Sophie makes too emotionally wrenching -- I did.
