Read to Find out why it's Great
3.5/4 stars
A much more emotionally intense side to the Hulk, but i wasn't suprised when i heard it was from Ang Lee. My only question is why the Hate? I mean yeah, the Hulk looks like shit when they show his full body, like not in the dark, and there is not a lot of "Smashing", but thats what kills movies, too much special effects? Isn't that what people were complaining about with Spider-man 3? But Hulk takes the exact same approach they talked about, and it made it a crappy movie. People, make up your minds. Ang Lee's Hulk was never going to be centered around violence, Ang Lee isn't that type of Director. The movie is a very dark and emotional side of the Hulk. Eric Bana's Bruce Banner is always under unbeliveable stress and the point was for us to understand his pain, which they succeeded in. Hulkis gripping to people that aren't "Violence oriented" because it leaves us thirsting for the next part of the story.
The plusses:
Definatly the flashbacks. Showing how Bruces Dad got to be who he is, with Bruces childhood is perfectly done. The death of the mother and how they depict Bruces transformation into the Hulk. The scenes when Bruce is the Hulk and is turning calm again are relaxing and gripping. The story is much better than expected. It seems like all the other versions of the Hulk, all he is doing is being chased. That's not the case, its more of Bruce trying to control himself and his emotion, and the military isn't even important untill about half-way through the movie. The intensity is brilliant as well. The Music mixed with Bruces close-ups and panning down in the dark is as emtional as Comic Book movies get.
The Minus's:
The whole comic book idea was creative, but it kinda ruined the movie, it would have been much better without them. The Hulk looks great for the most part, but that's only because it's always in the dark. Overall, he's ugly and over bulked. I guess the lack of violence is a drag to some, but to classics lovers, this makes the movie great. The Hulk killing the dogs, even though they were bitches.
So overall, if you are just looking for Action, watch the newer version. If you are looking for a great story, with great acting and a much more emotional side to a brilliant hero, watch Ang Lee's Hulk. But make sure you don't comment about the movie unless you understand the end. The Dad got the powers in the EXPLOSION! They do explain it, you're just to lazy to figure that out.
